Replacing mobo like for like, reinstall XP?

  aca 19:13 19 Nov 2007

Failed mobo, have sourced identical board. Currently have Windows XP SP2, hoping to avoid a reinstall.

Is it wishful thinking that I will be able to put it all together and it work ok?

I've never tried it but if it is the same board theres no reason you would have to reinstall or even repair windows, it should run as soon as you plug it in.

I don't know about Microsoft though, I don't know exactly what info they use to identify the board and it MIGHT realise its a different board, if it is just phone them and revalidate it.

Done this myself a few times now,you may have to contact Microsoft to register windows just as Totally-braindead says.

Sounds promising.

So long as you have a retail version not oem software you should be ok ,

Only BIOS could upset things
