recieved PC from friend , hdd already removed.
Bought and fitted new drive.
Attempted to boot up using win 98, boot disc also seagate boot disc! No response from either.
screen scrolls to page which reads
usual boot messages and press Del to enter system.
Nothing after this.
Can anyone help please.

you need to enter bios ( or cmos), ussualy via delete key at post, and set your system to detect new hdd,
sounds like it doesnt know what is fitted.

I have been into bios set to autodetect but
to no avail. any more ideas please?
regards "saabrover".

you may need to fdisc and format before you can start to load windows.

I am familiar 'f'disk and formatting:
but I cannot get any further than entering the bios, I repeat I have set bios to autodetect hdd, other instructions that I have tell me to input hdd info into bios,ie disc size, number of sectors etc, but I do not seem to be able to do this.I have tried with jumpers set at cable select & also set as master. still no joy.
Any more ideas please.

from me
best if you post on forum, then you will get better brains than mine trying to help,

but to keep you going, can you name and no the mobo.
i think you might needset your bios to auto, sounds like the computers we play with at colege, instead of setting size /sectors etc manually, these need to be set to auto before you auto detect hdd.
