replaceing old grahics card - compatibility

  talisker 12:46 31 Jan 2009

Need to replace a periodically malfunctioning NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti4200 card with a basic £50ish new one. Processor is AMD ATHLON 2100+ MMX 3D now, ~1.7Ghz, think the motherboard is MSI. Can anyone help with compatibility/suggestions/ as concerned about compatability e.g seen that a lot of new cheap cards have PCI-Express 2.0 X 16 connection.
Dont need anything too fancy as only for basic use.

ti 4200 is an agp card, pci expess slots are different, so if you are using the same motherboard you need another agp card. you can get a 6200 agp for about £30 with passive cooling so no fan noise.

Tried to replace NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti4200 with 6200 agp. No problem fitting it but get no picture on monitor just "monitor status" on black screen. Dont get login or blue screen or anything else. Old card was 128Mb new one 256Mb - told this makes no difference. Anyone know different or any ideas? When put old card back and reinstall driver works ok (with intermittent fault). Thanks.
