Replace the MBR (Master Boot Record) for Xp

Hi All.

Don't panic, i have'nt lost the use of my MBR, merly want to "change" it.

I installed Mandrake a while back, and have desided the hard drive space would be better used as storge, because so far, i have only used Linuxs a few time.

Now, i intend to format the partition , but if correct, i'm still going to get the Mandrake Boot loader...

Now what i've been told i'll need to do, is insert the XP cd, press R to get into the recoverly consule, and then fix the MBR by tying fdisk /mbr (or is it Fix MBR)?

Is this correct, because the last thing i want, is to corrupt my MBR by trying to fix it :P

ok, well, i got into the recovery consule, and then i got this message...

Microsoft Windows(R) Recovery Console

The Recovery Console provides system repair and recovery functionality.
Type EXIT to quit the Recovery Console and restart the computer.

1: C:\WINDOWS

Which Windows Installation would you like to log onto
(To cancel, press ENTER)?

What do i need to entre? If i hit Enter, it quits and then continues to boot up like normal...

Download the Win 98 one. Boot from the floppy and type:

fdisk /mbr

Click ok.

MBR fixed.

you can use a windows 98se oem bootdisk from click here and it works with xp.easier than the recovery console.i have done this myself.

Ah.. Smaching, just so happens i have a 98 boot disk! (i'm a Junoir Techy and its handy having one in my tool kit)

Right, i'll give that a crack...

Well... Good news, as you well predicted, it worked a treat. Just booted up and gave it a go, worked without a glich, so no more Mandrake Boot loader!
