Repairing Windows XP

Is there a way of repairing a Windows Xp install. I think some files may have got corrupted over a period of time. If so, does it completely get rid of all setup files and replace them as if it was doing a completely new install or can it look at files that appear to be corrupted.

Try going to Start > Run and typing in:

sfc /scannow

and click OK, first, before trying a full Repair.
