  johnnyrocker 11:40 12 Jan 2015

i have had an ongoing problem with my pc in that it will suddenly stop for about two minutes then carry on as normal. i have got to the stage i feel a repair is my only option, i would be very reluctant to lose my old data but i understand there is a way of doing so without loss, i would be very grateful if someone could provide me with details ( i am a bit slow so need to be very clear ) my other query is pc serial number which came pre installed how would i get over this?

many thanks in advance and happy new year to all johnnyrocker

If you have the correct XP CD, it is possible to do a repair BUT I've found this to be very unreliable. Far better would be to save all your data then do a fresh install from that CD or, on some machines, there will be a 'restore to factory settings' partition which can be accessed via a specific function key on boot. Give more details on make and model so we can check to see if this is an option.

First--- Use magic Jelly Bean to find your serial number

Repair XP by install over the top of existing system

  1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

  2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

  3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER.

DO NOT choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console).

  4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

  5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.

  6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.

Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears.

Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

put the CD in the drive and reboot

if you get a message on the screen saying Press any key to boot from CD then BIOS change not needed just press a key at the message and start from 2 in the instructions above.

If you do not get the press any key message reboot and you should see a message that says press F2 or Del or ESC (r similar keys) to enter setup.

just press the appropriate key at the message and the BIOS screens appear.

your now looking for something that says Boot order (or similar) you need to set the CD drive as the first boot device and the HDD as the second boot device.

once set save and exit (F10)

on reboot it should give you the Press any key to boot from CD message
