Removing the annoying icons in XP

Just got a brand new toy - Windows XP Professional and am trying to adjust it for my own use. You know the annoying icons in the bottom right hand corner of the screen - how can I remove them from there permanently ie. AVG, phone synch one. There doesn't seem to be an options menu in the programme itself to remove these from the task bar.

Sure its simple, not sure how. Thanks

Think twice about AVG.

Click Start, Run, Type:

msconfig

Click OK.

Click Startup, remove ticks, reboot, icons gone [ish]

Right click Taskbar, select Properties, Taskbar tab, Customize button. Change Behavior to always hide for those you don't want to see.

That area of the screen is the "task bar" and its not actually that simple to remove stuff, some of them you probably cant if you want the software to run at startup, eg AVG....
You can set XP to hide the inactive icons or look into the program setting of actual application for something like "Do not display icon in task bar" and check this..
Other wise you can hack your registry, shich is not a good idea.. ..
