remove taskbar icon for norton firewall/antivirus

Hi, I have norton antivirus and firewall installed, and there is an option to not show the taskbar icons. I would just like to know if this is ok? or are there higher risks if they're not shown. I'm just assuming that they're running in the background but I dont know. Does anyone else have the same program that can help. Thanks.

That option should only remove the icon, the processes will still be running in the background. The only problem I can see is that you won't know if it fails to load, although Microsofts Security Center should let you know if SP2 is installed.
