I have found this one to be very reliable, though I don't know if it is still available click here I have had mine for several years, it has never let me down.

I always found LG drives to be significantly more reliable then others, when I built systems. I've had two LG drives in my system for many years - still going strong.

Unfortunately designs and builds change, so past "goodness" is only an indication that new models will also be OK.

Many optical drives are re-badged products from a specialist manufacturer - at the price they sell at these days there would seem to be only a very slim profit margin.

My two first CD-RW drives were TDK badged, but were in fact a re-badged Plextor and then Samsung; the current Sony DVD-RW is produced under a joint venture with NEC.

Incidentally the first TDK/Plextor drive cost me around £190, whilst the seven-year-old TDK/Samsung drive still works perfectly but gave way to the Sony DVD equivalent. Price - just under £20..:-)

If you go to section 5.1 of:

you'll find quite a bit of individual information on optical drives from a large number of brand names.

Out of curiosity, what model did you choose and why?
