Reinstalling WinXP - Product Key problem?

I have formatted a laptop hard drive and am reinstalling winXP Home from CD [Genuine Bought Copy]

The installation tells me that the Product Key from the COA on the bottom of the laptop is invalid.

However if I use the COA from another laptop the installation continues!

The problem I can see is when I come to validate the installation.

Can anyone shed any light on what is happening?

If your installing from a genuine bought copy of XP then that will have its own product key.If you bought a retail copy then it wont accept the laptop key as that would be an OEM copy.

Yes - it is an OEM copy.

I cannot understand why it will accept one product key but not another.

If I were to continue with the installation using the product key from the other laptop how would I overcome validation?After all I have effectively bought two licenses for this laptop - the preinstalled copy and the OEM copy!

Thanks for the suggestions which I suppose were less than constructive.

Have successfully entered the correct product key into the registry by using Micro$ofts own tool ,the aptly named "KeyUpdateTool_enu"

I cannot understand why it will accept one product key but not another.

It can happen if they're at different Service Pack levels.
