Reinstalling Windows XP

  hector710 12:31 11 Apr 2004

I have XP home installed on my machine;it is the upgrade version, and was installed over W98 se; however, W98 se was preinstalled on my machine.I have the product key number, but not the actual cd rom. If I ever needed to do a reformat, and reinstall XP, would I be able to do so, given the above facts?

You could only install XP over the top of your existing installation. To do a complete format and reinstallation you would need a full version of windows not upgrade fron 95 onwards.

Small point but you cannot upgrade to XP from W95 it has to be W98 onwards click here

If I remember corectly the upgrade version is the full version with a requirement to prove you have an existing installation.
Your 98 installation is most probably stored somewhere in your Windows folder.

You cannot upgrade fron Win 95 but a direct upgrade is not attempted in this case, win 95 can be used as qualifying media ie you just pop in your win 95 disk temporarily during installation of xp using the upgrade disk.
