Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop, XP SP3 bugged out and reinstalling from the XP disc that came from Dell.

Formatted and re partitioned OK

XP says installing OK

Then asks for disc 2 to complete set up but there was only ever 1 disc? Am I missing something?

I have the usual drivers discs, media disc etc but it doesnt want that

on start up it again asks for the second disc to complete installation?

Any ideas apart from source disc 2?

You may have blown it by Formating and Partitioning Hard Drive. You could try undeleting the partitions using TestDisk click here Read the blue text near bottom of page for help It does work as I used it in the Past

Is it asking for SP3 Disc as this also can be had on CD, If you have Anti-Virus up and running try running Windows update under start program list

We are still in the XP installation mode, it cant complete setup without disc 2, which I never needed before (when I had to do same to another laptop). I might try a different XP professional disc (we bought 4 at the same time a few christmas' ago)

Thanks for the tips woodchip, i'll keep in mind the link for Testdisk.

I started again but used the media edition cd rom first then the XP disc, all worked well? (no request for dvd 2)

Now for the dreaded windows updates, :-/
