Registry fix

Does anyone know of a freeware version of registry fix, I am asking because recently and even in the past when I have had problems with my registry or missing files, these commerecial window machanics or registry fix seems to detect hell of a lot fault in the computer registry and tells you that you have to buy the full version to rectify all the faults. Is this some sort of "scare mongering" tactics that these companies use to get people to part with their cash to buy their products when you don't really need to. I just want to try a free version to see if I get as many faults reported. that way I can be sure if I really need to buy the full version of these products. Appreciate any input.
