reformating pc will i lose downloaded steam games

  computerdiv 20:15 28 May 2009

Hi all,
I need to do a full system format of windows as its now full of bugs.
I have downloaded left for dead through my steam account and want to know how to save the game as I can't find it on the C drive where it downloaded to.
Any Ideas as to where steam would have hidden it or will I be able to download it again for free as I have already paid for it?

If you format you will loose all data not just Steam and left 4 dead.

I know with The Orange Box,haven't checked with Left 4 Dead ( L4D what a game),you can back up the game to a HDD or disc for reinstalling with all the patches and updates.I believe Steam should offer this option for L4D ?

I haven't tried L4D, but I know for the others e.g. Orange Box and Audiosurf, I can just install the Steam program and it remembers the games associated with my account and allows me to download it. I imagine this applies to all games on Steam?

If running XP, why not try a Repair Install, Using the XP CD

If you do the above it over writes the OS, you ill need to download all MS updates after. But it will not touch your files these will remain
