Can anyone please tell me how I can reduce a picture down to a max size of 50mb so I can post it on the net.
I have windows xp and have opened it in the my pictures section but cannot see how to make it smaller.

Do you have MS Office? The Picture Manager included in Office allows simple reduction in picture size to a variety of formats.

No afraid not. Got everything but MS office, unless office tools is the same.

Image Resizer click here

Down on the right. It adds to the right click menu.

If you go from where you are and click on e-mail picture in the left task pane it will then ask you if you wish to make the pic smaller. Alternatively download free software like Google picassa which will do it for you.

Thanks Graham.
Just downloaded it and will give it a go.

You could always try the MS Paint included with XP (it's under Accessories). If you open the image in Paint you can then save it in a different format (JPEG for example) which will reduce the physical size of the file or you may be even able to crop the image before saving. Another 'free' and useful image manipulation program is Irfan from click here Good luck!

You'll have to experiment with Image Resizer. It depends on the size of the original.
