recovering e-mails (OE) from formatted hard drive

Some help needed!

I thought I;d back up with the windows transfer wizzard now the 'new' computer wont accept the memory sticks with the files on - it saved as as dat file but asks which programme to use - word says its too big and excel only open part of it.

i'm stuck - can you recover e-mails from a formatted drive? my ISP says you cat get them from the seriver.

You wont be able to open the .dat file.
create a new user and then copy the .dat file into the new user.
If this works then copy it into the main user profile.

Outlook Express files are .dbx - try searching for .dbx files from Run>Search.

You need to run the transfer wizard on the new computer - then when it asks for the data, point it to your memory stick. You don't just try and open the file - you must run the transfer wizard.

Can you recover emails from a formatted drive - basically no - you've wiped everything from the drive.

With some effort you may be able to "unformat" it - but try running the transfer wizard first.

If you use, or have access to your email account via webmail - then look there and see what's still on your server.
