Recording FM radio on to laptop harddisk

I want to record FM radio from my hi-fi on to my laptop (Sony Viao) then burn the music on to CD for my own consumption but am not sure how to proceed.
Also, I have the following questions ?

Is it legal ?
What connection do I need between hi-fi tuner and the laptop ?
Is the soundcard in the laptop adequate ? If not what should I do as I want to create (near) CD quality if possible ?

download audacity it is free and try it to see if you are happy with the result.
