Recommendations please

My son will be going to University in September and will require a laptop. Please may I have suggestions for a reliable laptop priced at around £500.

Windows 7 of course (for future proofing)

Any sub £400 laptop will be fine.

AMD or Intel. Not Celeron.

3GB Ram 250GB HDD, 500GB better, but you might have to hunt aroun.

It doent really matter anyway.

You dont need Norton or McAffee antivirus, avira/avast/avg are free.

You dont need MS Office. Openoffice is free too.

Good luck t your son. Uni is a great 3 years.

Some sort of backup device. This is essential!!
As well as the danger of failure of the laptop, laptops are easily stolen, or just plain and simply lost!

Unless he really needs the portability I would give serious consideration to a small desktop... less likely to be stolen, and more durable.

If you do go for a laptop things to consider are battery life and the type of keyboard... many now do have a numberpad on the right hand side. Depending on what he's studying this may, or may not, be a gerat boon!
