Reading barcodes

  Landy Man 17:42 10 Feb 2004

Anyone know of a freeware.shareware programme to read barcodes on a PC. Is it possible to scan a code with a flat bed scanner, and get some software to analise this and display the results. I appreciate this would not be any use for a quantity of codes, where it would pay to buy a reader wand or similar, but I would be interesed to read just a few.

I have trolled the freeware/shareware sites without success, but for something like this, it is hard going.

Come on Helproom users, you have never let me down yet!.

Some of the computer magazines have advertisements from a barcode specialist outlet - they are usually in the classified section near the back of the mags.

HI Atuartlu

OK, trudged through the list you proposed, but to no avail. All were big bucks commercial sites. Adverts in the mag were similar. I did find Maplin Electronics do a unit which looks just what I need. Their A76AG Barcode Scanner @ £70. It comes with some utility software, but when I enquired to their "technical" dept. they were less than helpful. First they denied it came with any software. Then when they admitted it did, but they have no stock and dont know what it will do. I despair!!!! Anyone know another source for this A76AG Barcode Scanner?

Of course the other problem with barcode scanners is that so many different companies have their own brands and as such different codes. Just look at a box of say baked beans and the code on the box is different to the code on the cans.
