Is it safe to re-install xp over the top of my present xp , if so is there a best way of doing it to solve some of the problems I am encountering. Dave

From experience I can tell you that it safe to repair the installation although again, in my experience, it doesn't necessarily cure any faults.

I think you get a warning if you try to reinstall rather than repair that it is not recommended but I haven't actually tried that myself.

how do I go about repairing the installation. Dave

I'm working from memory here. Boot up with the XP install disk, after the driver files have loaded select the option to setup Windows. Although it looks as though you're going to set up a new installation one of the options available is to do a repair.

Someone with a better memory (or has just done it) may be able to give more detail.

Go here click here: choose the repair XP option from the list and it will show you the steps needed.

The option is "How To Run a Repair Install"
