There is a place in Maldon, Essex that accepts old machines and re-cycles them. I am planning to give them my 1998 Gateway, but before doing so, I want to wipe the hard drive. Any suggestions, please, for the best/easiest of wiping clean the "C" drive. Many thanks in advance.

avesnes, I am thinking of doing the same as you and as my daughter lives in Maldon I could get her to take it there as I live in Norfolk. Would you please give me the address of the place you mention. You may email me via my yellow envelope if you prefer. Many thanks. Meshuga.

pj123,
When I right click on the "C" drive in "My Computer" and then select "Format", I get the message "Windows cannot format this drive because it contains files in use by Windows." I assume this is a safety precaution to prevent disastrous accidents. This old machine is running Windows 98.
Is there another way to re-format?

Download a Bootdisk from click here and make the Boot Floppy Disk(s)

Boot from this and at the prompt type in

Format C:

Do you have a start up disk (floppy)?

If not then click here have the files to copy to a floppy.

Then reboot the PC with this disk in the drive and at the C:\ type 'format C' (without the ')

It will ask "Are you sure......?"

Hit Y for yes and watch in horror/amazement as it all disappears.

This doesn't completely destroy the data of course, it hides it from all but the most determined.

You will need something like woodchip suggest to completely wipe it.

AndySD,

I must learn to type faster..... :D

Thanks for the guidance. It all worked as you advised and I plan to take the old kit to the Maldon address for charitable re-cycling next Wednesday. I am very grateful for your help.
