Who can tell me what a .rar file is (from Bit Torrent)? My son has been downloading these, but I can't get my teeth around them. Is it a compresion format or what? I understand MP3, avi, mpeg etc, but what is Bit Torrent, please?

It is a winrar file. basically a compressed file like winzip.

In order to open it you need this

use the trial version first.

It is a good thing to have though!!!

.rar files are compressed or zipped files which can be opened with WinRar. Bit Torrent is a bit like KazaA and is usually, but not always, used for downloading Copyright material.

Thanks folks. I was getting a bit worried - but I now understand that it is just a new compression format. Are there any disadvantages/bugs/problems with it ?

Not with WinRar, Bit Torrent is another matter.

What's the difference ?

  Salinger 00:59 15 Nov 2004

WinRar is simply a compression/zip format, Bit Torrent is usually used in P2P downloading.

i assume you have loads of .rar files after downloading with bittorrent?

Right click the first file and click on "extract here"

If it is a movie then you will either have a .cue and .bin files or .img files

then use Nero
