RAM shortage?

When I bought my PC, the advertising blurb said 512mb RAM, when I look in System properties, it says memory; 348mb RAM. Have I been short-changed on memory, or is the rest of the RAM in use? Although no programmes were running at the time?

Probably you have an integrated video on the motherboard and this is 'using' the missing RAM

Thank you, now RAM as I understand it, is the piece that I can increase by plugging in another alongside the existing? I assume that I have to use similiar i.e. 512MB Corsair DDR400?

I have just looked on the PCWorld site, In 512 RAM they have 2 - DDR, 2 - DDR DIMM and 2 - DDR2 listed, what is the difference? or to simplify that, which one do I need? I assume Corsair to be the make of my existing, does the 400 have any signifigance?

Yes 400mhz has a significance - that is the speed of the RAM.

It is also known as PC3200 RAM

click here for 512mb at PCWorld for £25

What you need is DDR 3200 RAM.

By the way, DDR 2 will not work for you - what you need has 184pins whereas DDR2 has 240.

Thanks, Diemmess and Diodorus Siclius for your assistance, RAM is on its way from PCWorld.

Have you got PCW nearby? If so, you can order on the web using Collect At Store. click here

PS If not PCW nearby, and you are making a purchase via the net, then have a look at click here

Thanks Diodorus Siculus, its ordered and on its way. PCW is twenty plus miles away, It was cheaper to pay the £3.99 postage than to run my 4WD there and back.

Not to worry - Crucial is my favourite for RAM - excellent service and the RAM guaranteed to work. Generally their prices are pretty competitive too.
