Ram question

I'm running xp pro and have 2 x 512mb pc4000 crucial ballistix memory. I've ran a scan on their site and the options given are pc3200 or pc5000 but not pc4000. I can't find pc4000 at other sites either (eg dabs)

Would pc3200 be adequate and what is the effect of mixing premium memory (ballistix) with standard memory? Would it just run at the performance of the standard memory?

I want to add 2 x 512mb standard ram so I will have 2gb in total (4 x 512mb). The cheapest I can find for 2 x 512mb pc3200 is around £30.

using a slower speed ram will slow down the existing ram to its speed, therefore probably negating the value gained in adding it in the first place. as ram is so cheap i would advise replacing it all with the faster speed ram

Have a lok at the memory at ebuyer click here . You can buy 2gb of good RAM, like Cosair for around£30.

I went for the 1 gb corsair memory at £30. Ran a 3d mark test and it made no difference to the result, but it performed much better on an intensive excel test (52 million simulataneous calculations).

So ram wouldn't normally improve the gaming performance (gfx card has 512mb memory)?

I think you find find that the "sweet spot" for memory in XP is 1 gig and on Vista its 2 gig and going above that does improve things but to a much less degree.

Regarding the 3d Mark benchmark if I recall correctly its mainly checking the graphics processor and therefore its hardly surprising theres no difference as the graphics card is the same.

If you ran a different benchmark program you would probably find a difference but with going from 1 gig to 2 gig it might not be that much.

I could have got 2gb for £30 (Kestrel's link) but thats for ddr2, mine takes ddr only.

I've read about the ideal level of ram for xp and vista. But with 2gb it does seem to have given excel a lot more number crunching power (it wasn't too bad with 1gb)

I didn't really expect 3d mark to improve.

With xp pro I find just the operating system is taking up about 35-40% of ram resources. I loook forward to upgrading to vista ultimate. (just hate reinstalling everything - a bit like moving house!)
