i have got 2 x 256Mb sticks of Ram (184 pin DDR). Put one in and pc sees it as 256mb. Put the other one in and it sees that as 256Mb. Put 2 together and call me old fashioned but i thought it would show 512Mb.... Nope.. Still 256Mb... What is happening. Have i got 512 or what?

For viewing ram I am using 'system' in control panel

and disable any kind of fast startup/rapid POST etc and then reboot. watch the numbers counting up, and see if they are correct.

might be a problem with the slot or one of the RAM.
try using both the RAMS one bye one and then repeat it with different slots .
thats what we call trial and error method

gets to 262144 kb. Repeats the count 3 times before continuing to boot. Will now do the trial and error method in other socket!

Out of interest i have i spare 168 pin ram. can you mix 168 pin and 184 pin?

No - unless you have a very unusual motherboard. What you absolutely cannot do is put a 168 pin module into a 184 pin slot.

Mobo has 2 x 168 pin sockets and 2 x 184 pin sockets. I wondered if you could put them in their respective sockets.

Also, Must have been dust or something because i have now tried both 184 pins in both 184 pin sockets and all worked. When both thrown back in together it now shows 512Mb!

On a few you can - on most you can't. Only the motherboard manual will tell you.
