Question about Hard Drive jumper pins.

  pcbobby 10:14 17 Mar 2007

My reserve PC is Compaq Deskpro EN
P3. 500 MHz . HD10 Gb.

I was given a 20GB hard drive, my plan was to make it a slave 2nd drive.

When I examined the current PC hard drive, it has the following jumper pin settings.
MA – SL – CS.
The jumper was across the CS pins.
I set the jumper across the MA pins with the intention of making it the primary drive, but it would not boot up without pressing F1.

How do I overcome this problem?

It's on cable select.
That means it uses the cable to determine that it is the master.

If you two positions ont he cable, the second one should be slave.
So use cs on the new drive for slave.

Alternatively, you could swap cable for a normal ribbon, which will enable you to use master, and slave settings on the drives.

was already the primary drive, so leave it as it was. Install the slave drive in the secondary IDE cable position, with the jumper set as SL.

Put BOTH HDD on the CS setting, the drive with the op system (primary) must be on the end connection of the ribbon cable.

Thank you Forum Editor. Fingees. Fruit Bat.

I shall disconnect this PC and hook up old PC and try your advice, and report back later.

Yes, leaving the jumper over the CS pins as primary, and the spare hard drive jumper pins as SL worked fine. Thank you.

I double clicked My Computer and found the new drive as APPS (E:)
Shall I leave it at that?

As indicated above, the second hard drive has now been installed.

But, when I double click MY Computer, it appears as APPS (E:)
The others are, A: Floppy. Local C:. CDROM D:

What does APPS mean on E: drive?

Hey joe, doesn't really matter you can name it what you like, right click the drive in my comp, select properties and under the general tab you can rename it there click apply click OK,good luck
