quad core processors and 4GB RAM

I've been told that with a quad core processor and 4 GB of RAM that each core is "assigned" 1GB. Is this true or can each of the cores address any (or all) of the total 4 GB RAM space?

Each core can access all the RAM, it is not assigned a particular chunk.

Having said that, if you install a 32 bit OS you will only be able to see 3 GB of the RAM, as the OS can only address 4 GB in total, and that includes the RAM on your graphics card, and the swap file. So the last stick of RAM will be ignored unless you install the 64 bit version of Windows, and then you may have trouble getting drivers.
