Pub PC gone south

A mate of mine has a PC (os XP home) which he uses to provide music in his pub (Windows Media player), it is also hooked up to the internet (Broadband) today when he booted up everything went well until he tried to start the player from the short cut it just would not start (the little hour glass just kept going) even the start button would not respond in fact after re-booting from the on/off switch on the PC none of the loaded programs would respond. Any ideas what may be wrong??

He really needs help with this, could the PC be infected??

Restart and keep tapping the F8 key just before the Windows screen loads. Then select Last Known Good Configuration from the menu.

Presumably we may get a response when the pub closes, anytime now?

I didn't go in last night but when I phoned about six O'Clock it was still down, I will be there today and if anything of interest crops up I will post a reply. Thanks all.
