Is the SSID the same in the new router?

Make sure the security protocol is the same ie WPA-PSK, WPA, WEP and the encryption ie TKIP or AES is also the same. Make sure the password is entered correctly - capital letters make a difference.
Try temporarily switching off Wireless security altogether in the router just to get the PS3 connected.
Check that MAC filtering is not enabled.
Enable SSID broadcasting so the PS3 can see the router.

How about connecting your old router and backing up the configuration settings through the web interface. Save the file to your Desktop.
Connect the new router and reinstall the configuration settings from the file on your desktop. This should work as you say the new router is the same model as your old one.

I took the old one back as a replacement. !

I've only set one up, but it required that the wireless password was 8 characters or less in length.

Rerun the Network settings in the PS3. They are the last one at the bottom. There is also a network diagnostic.

tried that also, re entered network key etc and done auto find on settings for dns etc
