protection fault

any ideas why a previously reliable machine would suddenly freeze with the following
"Kernel32 caused a general protection fault in module386.exe at 0001:00007a2" the only way out was a manual switch off.

Thanks folks, no doubt I'll find the answer here. Sorry but I still have to work for a loiving so it'll have to wait until tomorrow. Will be back then. (As an extra I've recently (it's been ok since so this isn't the cause, probably!) changed from BT surftime to BTYahoo surftime and it's Sloooow in comparison.))
Regards and thanks
