Programming language- which one

which programming language should i learn that would be useful and that i could use in later life?
something that i maybe would learn at Uni, os i would not go into college/Uni without a programming language.
which is the best one to learn and use?

Programming languages are horses for courses - you use the one appropriate to the kind of tasks you want to do. For instance C might be best for writing system software - Java for writing web software - Fortran for mathematical programs etc etc

So - what do you want to do with your programming?

Put introduction to programming into a google search and read a few articles.

are programming languages similar in a syntax aspect or are they all different? i think ill start with vb then move on to java as they are most common (i thinK)

Plenty of demand for this, as loads of companies have seriously old machines that need this and most COBOL programmers are ready for retirement now...

Why on earth not? - what course are you planning to take?

It may be your course has some requirements - those may push you into a certain direction, so read up on the syllabi perhaps.
