hello, could someone please explain or do a link, telling me what gigahertz mean in relation to processors i.e 1 GHz = x calculations and also, a guide to intel processors in order from best to worst (looking for a new laptop)

cheers D.M :)

There is more to take into account than just Ghz today with the New CPU's that are on the Market

"what gigahertz mean in relation to processors i.e 1 GHz = x calculations"

The GHz is the clock frequency to the processor. The clock is simply a timing signal that steps the processor through it's operations.

It doesn't translate into x calculations, as that depends on how much a processor can do in one clock cycle - and that varies from processor design to processor design.

Also "calculation" is an inexact term - it could be a simple thing or a very complex thing. Also many processor operations are not calculations at all - many simple move data around. So "calculations" could never be a good measure of performance. This Wiki on FLOPS illustrates the problem somewhat. click here

"a guide to intel processors in order from best to worst"

Best to worst always raises the question of best to worst what. Performance? Price? Power consumption?

Although dual-core and quad-core processors are generally understood to offer higher performance than single-core processors - a lot depends on whether the software you want to run mainly, is optimised for dual core or not. So software can affect system throughput, as can clock speed, memeory architecture, hard drive performance, graphics performance, amount of RAM and system chipset.

Looking for a new laptop depends on the whole mix, not just the processor.

If you give a clue as to your budget, and the things you want to do, maybe some people will give you some recommendations.

click here is the wikipedia guide to the latest intel processors - you'll find lots of further references at the end of the article.
