Processor speed seems low

I have a laptop with an AMD Semperon Mobile 2800+ processor and I was just have a look at the system prpoerties and it says that the procesor speed is onlt 803Mhz.

I thought this seemed a bit low so I went to the AMD web site and found a program called amd cpu info, and it says that the maximum speed is 1600 Mhz.

Does this mean there is something wrong with the processor or is this normal?

No, this is normal.

When a mobile cpu is not working very hard, it drops it's multiplier down ( not it's FSB ). Yours appears to tick over at half speed, this cuts down on power usage and also cools the cpu. When you start to put pressure on the computer, it will make the cpu run at full power.

I take it that it's a 64bit sempron. If so then they have two different clock speeds. One at 1600Mhz and 2000Mhz.

Thanks ed-o that will stop me from worrying about it.
