AMD Athlon64 4800 Socket AM2 Dual Core Processor
thinkin about buying it
but i am a bit confused how fast it is. it says its clock speed is 2.5ghz but is that one cores speed or x2 cores speed altogether?

I'm quite sure that the figure is the clock rate for each individual core. The 2 cores together give additional performance gain by sharing tasks. Pure clock speed alone is of little help, more important is how the processor handles the data. This site gives some interesting comparisons. click here

AMD64 Technology

Simultaneous 32- & 64-bit computing

L1 Cache (Instruction + Data) per core
128KB (64KB + 64KB)

L2 Cache (total dedicated)
1MB or 2MB

Note the word simultaneous both cores run at the same time/speed

so would the speed overall be 2.5ghz or 5.ghz?

The overall speed is just 2.5Ghz.

Far better to consider an Intel core2duo cpu, if you're starting from scratch. There core2duo's do have two individual chips so a rated 2.2Ghz one will have a total speed of 4.4Ghz.
