Problems with Youtube and other similar websites

I've recently been experiencing problems with my pc. About a month ago I had a message come up on my screen saying that a 'pup' had been detected. I decided to go with the option of removing it. Ever since then I've been having problems - they may or may not be related to this.
I first noticed it on the website youtube. Everytime I select a video to view it starts to show the first couple of seconds then stops. Iit then asks if i'd like to view again. I'm basiciall unable to use youtube. Other sites that have video clips to download the same thing happens where it will start to download but then just stop and won't get any further. Also my inrternet explorer seems to have slowed right down. I open up google but it takes time then says 'cannot find server' I then click refresh and it usually gets there instantly. Ii've never had these problems before and it is becoming very frustrating. Could it be the'pup' that I removed? How can I fix this problem?
