Problems writing to CD - replacing atapi.sys SP2

I can't write to any but one brand of CD-R/RW. In Issue 130 (May) there is a tip in the helpline that suggests replacing the SP2 version of atapi.sys with the pre SP2 version. The instructions on how to do this are not clear enough for a novice like me. I wonder if anyone can give me some guidance (Windows XP, with SP2 installed).

It suggests copying the older file to Windows\System32\DLLCache, which I can't find.

(It also suggests copying it to Window\Drivercache\\1386 - which I CAN find).

How do I know which/what is the older atapi.sys file anyway?

I would keep a copy of any files you are going to mess with so you can replace them in the event of a system restore failure. I presume the older file will be dated sometime before the SP2 version
