Problems with NEC 1300A DVD Re-Writer

I keep having trouble writing CDs with my NEC 1300A DVD Writer. It's stop writing to CD-Rs. I use Nero 6 and simulations go ok but when I write something it says it can't perform fixation. I've tried burning a number of blank CDs but I get the same problem. Also, before it stopped burning altogether, I couldn't write to CD-RWs properly as it would burn ok but then when I read the CD afterwards its only recognised as a CDROM rather than a CD-RW so I can't erase it.

I don't know if this is a hardware or software problem. I'm running Win XP but I bought it OEM so I don't have any drivers or a manual.

Can anyone help?

James

Hi,
I'm having the same problem myself. I've flashed the firmware to 1.08 (downloaded from click here) but this doesn't help.
I can burn dvd's fine but the drive doesn't want to know with cd's.
I use dvdinfopro to format / erase my discs and check the drives read / write info but I'm stumped (easily done).
I've also tried burning with other software (normally use nero) but still get the same end result.
Heres some of the error report:

Thanks for the pointer crx1600, "Nero help suggests a known problem, with 'Session fixation error writing lead-in/Power calibration area nearly full' when APM is enabled in Control Panel\Power Options".
I've been trying to find the "APM" but all I can find is the option to set pc as always on. The link you suggested advises to "deactivate energy saving mode".
I'm going hunting for this now, if you could point me in the right direction it would be a great help.

Thanks
Petecat

Hi chugby,
I've already got Herries latest firmware for the NEC 1300A.
Thanks for the pointer though.
Cheers

My pc doesn't have it (running on windows xp home)- APM function. I've entered bios at start up thinking I might be able to disable the energy saving mode there but no joy. Dvdinfopro shows that the drive has power management but I can't find where to disable it - the search continues.

Hi Petecat. I can't find anything about APM either. I've updated my firmware to 1.08 but I still get the same problem. I'm thinking about getting a new drive seeing as I can't seem to resolve this problem.

So seeing as I don't have APM then what could be the problem?

  Petecat 19:00 24 Jun 2004

Hi jamesyt, I'm thinking along the same lines as yourself (new drive). It seems that theres always a downside to whatever you have or do - a new drive will probably have a flaw somewhere so I think I'll get a dedicated cd writer only (not combined dvd/cd as the NEC claims to be). I'll try a different make as well - can anyone recommend one that they've had working without any problems?
Thanks Petecat

Try another brand of media. There is a lot of rubbish media about.
