Problems with laptop CD driver fault - code 39,

  hippo_oxford 23:36 22 Jan 2011

Hi, when I put a DVD into the player on my laptop you can hear it spin up;

BUT - it doesn't start to play or come up with any menu automatically.

When I therefore go open windows mediae player - it says drive can't detect a DVD in the player.

It says code 39 fault - driver may be corrupted or missing! : (

Says: could not load driver software.

I tried the 'click the link' for it to auto look for a solution - but nothing comes up - i.e. no repsonse at all.

I also went into the device manager - and asked it to lok for newer driver software - but it caem back saing it had the latest version installed.

Anything else I can try as a novice before I get it sent off for repair??

Many thanks, T.
ps I have 3000 words to finish writing for college before monday - so don't want to risk killing the laptop!

Try this if the optical drives are not appearing in My Computer or Device Manager.
(This is sometimes caused by the removal of Roxio or other writing software.)

or manual fix
Run regedit and navigate to registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
Highlight it and in the right pane, find the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values.
Highlight each one in turn, right click and delete them.
Close regedit and restart the computer.
If in doubt make a restore point before making changes.
