Problems installing Third party software in XP

On occasions when I try to install third party software I get yhe following message.-

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG.NT.
THE SYSTEM FILE IS NOT SUITABLE FOR RUNNING MS-DOS AND MICROSOFT WINDOWS APPLICATIONS.
CHOSE CLOSE TO TERMINATE THE APPLICATION

The last software I tried to install was Hewlett Packard Printer Drivers etc. specifically written for XP
