Problems installing Radeon X1300

Hope somebody can help.
I am trying to install a Radeon X1300 AGP card. When it is connected the computer hangs at the POST stage with messages about the SMART status of my primary HDD and the two DVDs installed. I sorted out the SMART statys and disabled the DVDs and the card ran OK as I ahd downloaded the latest ARI drivers and could install without a disc drive.
However as soon as I re-enabled the DVDs the same problem reoccured.
I am running a P4 3.2, XP PRO with all updates and regularly update drivers.
Any body got a solution - back to old graphics card at the moment.

Is your power supply up to the job? When you say `disabled` do you mean, in BIOS or actually disconnected them - power cables/data cables etc?

It's a 500 watt supply, the fan on the card goes round.
I disabled the DVDs both in the BIOS and using Device Manager.
