Problems Formatting C Drive

It won't let me format the C drive because it says some files are using windows. I have removed all programs and tried to end processes in the task manager but I stopped something and it made the pc shut down.

I want to load another windows xp disk but it's an older version than the one running so it won't install automatically.

Any ideas what I need to stop in order to get the format to work?

It's not possible to format the C: drive from within Windows. You'll have to boot from the XP CD and format from there.

XP on the same hard drive or overwrite the old version?

"I want to load another windows xp disk but it's an older version than the one running"

Why would you want to do this? Do you have a problem?

As MAJ says - you cannot format from within Windows - it would be wiping out files it's actually using. Use an XP CD to do it.
