Problems connecting to work wi fi network

**Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop. Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit SP1**

I have been trying to connect my laptop to my employer's wifi network. This is legitimate but the IT dept. insist they are unable to provide assistance due to the number of possible operating systems. I know I have the correct password and username as I was able to enter both into my Android smartphone and within seconds I was online. Windows however locks me out without any explanation, just the 'troubleshooting' wizard. I suspect it has something to do with my 'Homegroup' settings but I'm stumped. Can any of you flesh and blood Wizards help me where the virtual one failed please?
