Problems with CD and Freezing

  cjay85 12:52 15 Jan 2007

I am pretty basic in my knoweldge of computers so you may have to bear with me during my description! I am using a Packbard Bell EasyNote laptop with Windows XP purchased just under 18 months ago.

The first problem that I am having is regarding my CD-Rom Drive (D:/).

A few months ago my computer crashed and upon reboot I found that the CD that was in the D drive at the time of the crash would no longer work.

Since then I have been having more problems with the drive. Certain CD disks were not being recognised by the drive or an error message appeared when trying to open the folder of the CD.

This has now escalated into the D Drive not appearing anyhwere within the 'My Computer' folder and whenever I put ANY disk into the CD Drive the computer will freeze and I have to re-boot.

This next problem may be related - I do not know! When I take the laptop from sitting flat on a desk (i.e. onto my lap) the machine will make a noise from within and will automatically freeze. In order for the machine not to freeze I have to have it placed perminately on a flat surface.

Any help/tips would be gratefully appreciated!

Looks like a case of something worked loose inside the case.

Could be:

1. Power supply to the drives
2. Memory card loose
3. Fan power supply loose.

The only way to check these is to have it looked at, at least this will narrow the field down...

If not as Streetwork suggests

Missing cd/dvd drives can be normally associated with the removal of burning software such as Nero/Roxio/Sonic/Easy CD Creator etc.

And not showing the drive in My Computer.

First thing to try is to reinstall your burning software.
If no joy, follow the helplines below.

Try the below link ,if still no luck follow the Procedure of removing the upper and lower filters.

Missing cd/dvd drive
If it is showing an error code:
Code 19, Code 31, Code 32, Code 39, or Code 41
, delete the drive.

Then follow these directions for clearing the Upper/Lower Filters: (might want to print this out)

1. Click on Start --> Run --> and type in 'regedit' followed by the enter key
2. Expand the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" key (looks like a folder) by double clicking it (or
3. clicking the "+" next to it.)
4. Expand the "SYSTEM" Key
5. Expand the "CurrentControlSet" Key
6. Expand the "Control" Key
7. Expand the "Class" Key
8. Please look for a key containing the following string of letter and numbers:
9. High light this key by left clicking once on it
10. On the right hand side you are looking for "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" under the "Name" column, once you find these please delete them by right clicking on them and choosing "delete"
11. Please exit the registry by clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner of the screen

Reboot your computer

If in any doubt editing the registry, please create a System Restore point first.

Creating a System Restore point:

Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore…follow the prompts.
