Problems with audio on new build.

Hello there to all my friends who use this forum.
I am having problems with the sound on my new build system, built on a Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H motherboard. Although the sound DOES function, when booting up windows 7 etc., I cannot get it to operate through all speakers when I play downloaded music. I have a 5.1 sound system.
When I go into the HD audio manager, and test the speakers, they work just fine, however when I play a tune I downloaded from the web, it only plays through the front centre speaker. I have uninstalled the audio drivers, then reinstalled up to date ones from the web, but I cannot get the surround sound aspect of the speakers. Am I missing something here, and if so would some kind person tell me what. I have quick time player, Roxio Easy media creator, and Sony Ericsson Media manager all installed on my system.
I would very much appreciate any advice on this matter.
Thanks to all who offer their help.
