Problem upgrading memory in Compaq desktop

  lofthouse 17:25 30 Mar 2007

Hi all, hope someone can help. I have just networked the 2 computers and the X box in our house. The second pc is an old Compaq EP Pentium 3 550 with 128mb PC100 ram. I am trying to upgrade it to make it run some games and the internet a bit faster. I borrowed another 128mb stick of PC100 ram and put it in. On startup the computer recognised it straight away but when Windows started to load I got the message 'Windows protection error when initialising device NTKERN: you must restart your computer'. Have since tried some PC133 ram (on its own) which the Compaq website says the m/board will support and got the same result.
Am I using incompatible ram or is there something else going on?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks VoG - tried that but got no joy. In fact the crucial tool seemed to be wrong - said my board could only support 512mb in 2 slots but the board has 3 and the Compaq manual says it will take 768mb.
