Problem starting Windows XP Home Edition

  Suzie. 09:34 12 Feb 2006

I am writing this on behalf of my partner. He used the MS restore program; when it restarted the computer, it seemed to "stick" so he restarted it again. When he got to desktop, all the programs seemed to be there except Windows XP itself. When he clicked restore, there was nothing there, and the same with everything to do with Windows XP. He can't go online at present because he has no anti-virus cover (but that's another story). His first concern is to get Windows back. The Windows is an upgrade from Windows 98 2nd Edition added about a year ago. How can he get Windows to start?
Thanks. Suzie.

Having looked at the instruction manual, my partner doesn't think he can use the Windows XP upgrade disk for this purpose. Wouldn't he need the full Windows XP CD? Thanks for your help.

A Windows upgrade disk will work - I've done it myself.

A PC manufacturer's 'recovery disk' may not work.

Thanks very much. He will try that! S.
