Problem with Slave Hard Drive

  MarkusAsparagus 19:50 05 Mar 2004

Following the article in Issue 104 regarding installing a new hard drive I decided to take the plunge. I have purchased a 120GB HD to complement my 40 GB HD. I set the jumpers to slave for the new HD connected everything up - no problems so far. Windows starts up ok and a message appeared to confirm the new hard drive. However, when I go into My Computer, the drive does not show up - yet is there in Device Manager. How do I get it recognised in My Computer and assigned a drive letter?

(I am using Windows XP)

Presumably, at some stage it will also need formatting as well?

Apologies for what is probably a simple question but I am realtively new to all of this and any help would be appreciated.

If you format it , it should show up .

You need to use Disk Manager to 'set up' the drive.

Go to Control Panel(in Category View) > Performance and Maintenance > Admin Tools >Computer Management > Disk Management.

You will see your new drive.

Right click on it and follow the instructions

How do I do that?

Many thanks cycoze and bremner - it is now formatting and assigned to as the M drive
