Problem with Office 2003 on Vista Business

Hi guys

I have just acquired a new laptop with Windows Vista Business installed.

I have a copy of Office 2003 which i had installed on my old lap top (which ran on Windows XP) approx 5 years ago and has worked fine on it since I installed it.

However when I try and load Office 2003 (same disc) onto my new laptop, it comes up with an error message 1608:(click here) along the lines of saying that Office 97,2000 or XP is required to be installed first on the machine for the CD to work.

And looking at the disc it does say Office 2003 "upgrade" (although the box just says "standard edition" which is what I thought i purchased at the time)

But what I don't understand is that my old laptop did not have any previous Office versions installed before I loaded Office 2003 so how come it worked on that, all it the old laptop had initially was Microsoft Works which I uninstalled any way after I loaded office 2003.

I have downloaded a free 60 day trial of Office 2007, but don't particularly like it or need it for my purposes, any suggestions as to how to get Office 2003 to work?

Cheers guys in advance.

Try loading it with UAC turned off

No-doubt I will be correcte3d if wrong, but I think that having Works installed qualifies you for an upgrade to Office. That is why it installed last time.
It appears that you will need a qualifying installation (Works or Office) on your machine before this upgrade disc will install, as the message is telling you.

Darn it. Think I binned copy of the Microsoft Works CD supplied with the old laptop while having a clear out a while ago. So it sounds like I may need to go and find an old version of Microsoft Works to load on the machine and then try and load Office 2003. Seems crazy.

Installing Works 7.0 then Office 2003 seems to have done the trick, cheers ventanas!
