Problem with my HP Photosmart 8250 Printer

I have a HP Photosmart 8250 which has stopped working.
It has proved extrremely reliable for the two years I have had it.
Today I am getting mesages:
"Ink System Failure" - on the PC
"Print cartridge cradle is stuck" - also on PC
"Ink System Failure" ERROR OXC18a0001" on printer
and ""Please Insert Card" also on printer.

Has my printer reacherd the end of its lifespan or can I fix it???
I have tried turning it on and off and checked no paper in it, all to no avail.

I have the same printer - for about 4-5 years now - never come across any messages like this. I will have a look into it further but at the moment I am stumped.

Further info.found out - Ink system failures is a very serious problem on HP printer systems. If you have this problem you should be ready to replace your printer. However there are still troubleshooting steps that you can do to try to resolve this problem. try this -

It doesn't list your printer but the error code you have is listed.

Try this first - if it fixes it, it will save you a lot of work.

Press the On button to turn off the printer.
Unplug the power cord and universal serial bus (USB) cable from the back of the printer.
Wait for 30 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the printer.
Press the On button to turn the printer on.
If Ink system failure does not display, the issue is resolved; reconnect the USB cable and resume using the printer.
