Problem with Microsoft Security Essentials

Pleased with MSE so far but a few times recently on start-up no icon appeared in the tray and I couldn't open the progamme from desktop.
Is my PC then unprotected?
A reboot has usually fixed the problem, but has created doubts about reliability of MSE.

I had this this morning, but when I checked in My Programmes, MSE was active and up to date. I believe it's just a glitch with the icons. There is a FixIt from MS which I found with a Google search.

Could you not open it from all programs.
Maybe make sure it is ticked in msconfig start up.

Did you fully remove any previous protection before installing MSE by using appropriate removal tools... NOT just uninstalling via control panel.

Also are you running any other security in real time ?

Thanks all for your responses.
Last occurrence was this a.m.
onthelimit-will look at the Fixit.
buteman-couldn't open from all programmes.
mooly-removed previous protection using appropriate tools,no other security other than that provided by router.

I went into msconfig and unticked mine and rebooted and of course it did not show on the Taskbar.
Changed it back again to ticked and rebooted and its back.
So maybe check just to be in the safe side.

onthelimit-Altho' the icon is back,I ran the Fixit and will wait and see.
buteman-have looked at msconfig-which startup item am I looking for? There is nothing which seems to be MSE.Apologies for my very limited knowledge.

msseces is what you should see for MSE in the startup tab of msconfig
